Drop it down fast, Pick it up slow

Image

I never consider what function an object will serve while I’m making and I don’t really think it’s important. This piece was being kept around as a second but recently has become home for a potted plant. I’m only really concerned with relevance and the ability to connect. Those two particulars are more than enough to provoke thought and consideration.

While I Wait

Here are some images of tests and new trials that I am currently in the the middle of.  The first image is a plate that was completed a few nights ago inspired by a Samuel Troxel plate made in 1828, below is an image of his work.  Secondly is a crystal test that was grown on a shard of broken porcelain made and destroyed by yours truly.  Maybe sometime soon I can recreate this on a larger scale.

Small Favors VII

Click Small Favors VII, to check out the current exhibition at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia.  I am exhibiting with good company, including two artists that I had spent time working with at the St. Petersburg Clay Company, Ian Meares and Tommy Frank.  I should mention that all the work had to be made to fit in a 4x4x4 inch plexiglass box.

I especially appreciate the hard work that goes into the exhibitions at The Clay Studio and the people who make them happen.

Daydream Pittsburgh

I thought I would share some images of graffiti with you that I see on a day to day basis around the city.  A majority of these tags can be seen on my walk to and from work at Wishful Thinking Incorporated.  The obsession and repetition it takes to scribble on everything in sight reminds me of making cups or maybe even clay in general.

I have started a link for people who are interested in buying my work.  Like everything else I do this online shop is a work in process.  At some point I hope to expand, but if you see something that strikes your fancy don’t hesitate because my pieces never quite happen twice.

It Pays to Cruise Ceramics Websites

Early in December I received an email from an artist that I once met long ago in St. Petersburg, FL.  This email started by announcing, “You won my cup contest and I bet you didn’t even know you where entered.”  To celebrate the 10,000th viewer of his blog, Ben Carter picked a lucky individual to receive one of his White Honeysuckle Tumblers and that person was yours truly.  Just recently this gift arrived in the mail and it is certainly a nice cup to add to my collection.

Currently Ben Carter has an exhibition at the Charlie Cummings Gallery showing a variety of functional pottery and a few tumblers just like the one I now enjoy drinking from.  What’s particularly special about these cups is that they are thrown on the wheel with a Yixing stoneware clay body unique to China.

Ben resides in Shanghai and to learn more about his work visit his blog The Tales of a Red Clay Rambler as well as a nice post he wrote titled And the Winner is… Brett Freund
